What is certification?
Certification levels
Technician and technologist are the two certification levels available in most provinces for the vast majority of applicants. Several provinces provide certification for various technical specialist occupations. Levels of certification are determined by education, competency and work experience.


Technicians
Certified Technician (CTech)
- Requires graduation from a one or two-year post-secondary technology education program or equivalent
- A minimum of 2 years relevant work experience
- Internationally educated applicants may be considered as equivalent
- Canadian Armed Forces trade or technology training and service may be considered as equivalent.
- Select one discipline from approximately 15 that matches your education and work experience (Examples: chemical, civil, mechanical, electrical).
- Have at least 2 years relevant work experience that matches the technician profile.
- Complete the requirement for professional practice and ethics learning and examination for the province you have selected.


Technologist
Applied Science Technologist (AScT), Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.)
Certification as a technologist requires completion of
- a two or three-year technology program or equivalent
- two years of relevant work experience.
- Internationally educated applicants may be considered as equivalent
- Canadian Armed Forces trade or technology training and military service may be considered as equivalent.
- Select one discipline from approximately 20 that matches your education and work experience (Examples: chemical, civil, mechanical, electrical).
- Have at least 2 years relevant work experience that matches the technologist profile.
- Complete the requirement for professional practice and ethics learning and examination for the province you have selected.
- Other forms of non-formal learning and on-the-job training combined with adequate work experience may be considered for certification.
